In a dystopian-like city, a water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets forcing the citizens to pay to use public amenities. With gusto, and show-stopping numbers, a hero and his ragtag friends rise from the sewage to spark the revolution!

Character Type/Restrictions:

While all characters in Urinetown are written without specifying race, and the pronouns used below are how the characters are referred to in the text, the team is interested in how identity dynamics can inform the story, and we strongly encourage all actors to submit for the role(s) they see themselves in.

  • BOBBY STRONG - he/him - 20s - A member of the lower classes who works at Miss Pennywise’s toilet, he unexpectedly finds himself opened to love and awakened to the unfairness of the world. He becomes an unlikely leader of the revolution despite lacking the prerequisite skills.
  • HOPE CLADWELL - she/her - 20s - Mr. Cladwell’s daughter, she has grown up in a privileged bubble and is starting to see the inequality of the larger world.
  • PENELOPE PENNYWISE - she/her - 30s-60s - The owner of the local toilet, her job has given her a tough, no-nonsense exterior which guards a loving and tender heart that she only rarely lets others see.
  • CALDWELL B. CLADWELL - he/him - 30s-60s - Hope’s father and the president of Urine Good Company, he has learned to profit by exploiting the dire situation and lives in comfortable wealth. Believes it’s a dog-eat-dog world and he’s just doing what he has to do to survive.
  • OFFICER LOCKSTOCK - no pronouns given - 30s-50s - Steps in and out of the action, serving as both a police officer and our narrator. Has seemingly walked out of a film noir and is completely unaware that this show is actually a lighthearted comedy.
  • LITTLE SALLY - she/her - child role to be played by an adult - Lockstock’s sidekick, precocious and overly optimistic. She asks the pivotal questions nobody else is asking but is never listened to because of her age. She has seen enough to have a point of view about the world she lives in but is still innocent enough to remain optimistic about what could be.
  • ENSEMBLE - A small, versatile ensemble will play cover the rest of the roles: Officer Barrel, Mr. McQueen, Senator Fipp, Old Man Strong, Hot Blades Harry, Soupy Sou, Cladwell’s Secretary, Tiny Tom, Dr. Billeaux, Little Becky Two-Shoes, Mrs. Millennium, Bobby the Stockfish, Billy Boy Bill, Josephine Strong, Old Woman. (All ensemble members will have multiple named speaking roles, doubling as both members of the lower and upper classes.)
