ABOUT THEATRE EVOLVE:

Founded in 2017, Theatre EVOLVE is a 501(c)3 that aims to dismantle outdated gatekeeping practices in the theatre industry. We allocate 50% of every production to artists who embody the spirit of newness. This “newness” takes many forms—whether it’s artists who are new to the scene, new to their craft, or new to the city itself.

EVOLVE aims to support new artists and provide them with resources and experiences to empower them in the Chicago Theatre Community. We recognize that Chicago and the American Theatre at large have historically disenfranchised BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and artists with disabilities. We will take initiative within our company to address and eliminate barriers for artists and collaborators within our space.

Theatre EVOLVE has adopted The Chicago Theatre Standards, available at notinourhouse.org.

COVID policy – We will not hire any artists that are fully unvaccinated. If cast, you will be required to provide proof of initial vaccination. Everyone behind the table is fully vaccinated. Theatre EVOLVE will continue to evaluate best practices to ensure the safety of our artists and audience members.

Character Type/Restrictions:

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the above character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible, and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they are most interested in being seen for. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.

Medea - (30s, Femme, Any Ethnicity) - A powerful Goddess trapped in the body of a mortal woman. Everything she does she does with an unfathomable depth, whether that is loving, hating, creating, or destroying. She is well aware of her worth, pragmatic, and ambitious. Also has a flair for the extremely dramatic. [This role is already cast, seeking understudy only]

Mother (played by same actor as Medea) - Embodiment of the “Mother” archetype in the The Triple Goddess, also associated with Greek Goddess Demeter - harvest, protector, transition of life into death. One phase and face of womanhood. Magic - not mortal.

Neighbor - (20s, Femme, BIPOC) - The young woman who lives next door to Medea. She is in a place of deep curiosity about how the world works and what she may become. Does not mince words, brave, and unfatigued.

Maiden (played by same actor as Neighbor) - Embodiment of the “Maiden” archetype in The Triple Goddess, also associated with the Greek Goddess Persephone - spring, potential, birth/girlhood. One phase and face of womanhood. Magic - not mortal.

Nurse - (40s-50s, Femme, Any Ethnicity) - Medea’s nurse and also dearest friend (within that strange power dynamic). Full of elder wisdom and kindness, but not listened to or given the floor often enough. Generally hesitant of conflict, but has lived through more than enough to know it is sometimes necessary.

Crone (played by same actor as Nurse) - Embodiment of the “Crone” archetype in The Triple Goddess, also associated with the Greek Goddess Hecate - witchcraft, the night/moon, crossroads. One phase and face of womanhood. Magic - not mortal.

Jason - (30s, Masc, Any Ethnicity) - Husband of Medea. Takes stock in being calm, calculated, and logical. Ambitious if unsure of how to achieve his goals. Originally deeply enamored with the depth and power of Medea, and eventually unable to fit her into the life he desires. He is shaped by the world around him - the buffers, constraints, and power dynamics of his gender.

Messenger (played by same actor as Jason) - Lover of Neighbor, Employee of Jason. A young man on the precipice of deciding who he wants to be. Caught between two worlds - Medea’s and Jason’s. Attempts to mimic what he sees around him, but also attempts to listen.
