The Factory Theater is seeking actors for both main cast and understudy roles for The Sporting Life written by Marjorie Muller and directed by Kayla Menz. All roles are open ethnicity and age and while roles are currently listed within the binary, we encourage all actors to submit for the roles they are most interested in regardless of gender.

Show Description: “Dad’s new girlfriend is a serial killer and it’s honestly kind of iconic.”

16-year-old Dot still hasn’t gotten her period. Lucky for her, there’s a Witch in the woods who can get it started. However, in exchange, Dot must offer her the life of a man who has wronged her. And who better to offer than a math teacher? When Dot gets her elusive first period and becomes witness to the Witch’s murder, they become bonded in literal blood, sending Dot down a path of self-understanding, bitterness, and perhaps a little bit of violence too (as a treat). The Sporting Life is a ‘this girl is a woman now’ story brutally snapped open to expose the, sometimes literal, entrails of growing up girl.

Character Type/Restrictions:

*Bold indicates content warnings for things that particular character is involved with during the course of the play.

Dot (Dorothy) – (she/her) A 16-year-old who hasn’t had her period yet. Wears clogs and band t-shirts that are a little too big. Could really use her mom right now, but she passed 4 years ago in a car accident. Goes to catholic school and her street cred is her dad buys her all the CDs the other parents won’t. Stage combat experience preferred, simulated sexual contact, violence perpetrator.

Sherry – (she/her) A woman who lives in a trailer in the woods. Is she a Witch or is she just a woman? Takes Dot under her wing to usher her into womanhood and then some. Kills men for sport, but they sort of deserve it anyway. Simulated sex, violence perpetrator and receiver

Joe – (he/him) 40s. A dilf. A saddy daddy. Widower of 4ish years, a single parent to a 16-year-old girl. Has she started her period? Best not ask. Would probably like to get laid. Or just a kiss on the lips. Simulated sex, violence perpetrator and receiver

Mikayla – Dot’s best friend since kindergarten. Thinks she’s more mature than she is. Is gonna do it with her boyfriend soon. Witnesses violence, experiences offstage domestic abuse, also plays a cop in the final scene, violence receiver

An Older Man – Father Thomas, Mr. Carlson, Officer Lowell, et al. Simulated sex, violence and torture receiver

A Younger Man – Josh, Officer Jowell, Mr. Jarlson, et al. Stage combat experience preferred, simulated sexual contact, violence perpetrator and receiver
