All rehearsals and performances take place at St. Bonaventure, 1625 W. Diversey. Parking available.
Please do not audition if you are unavailable for any performances or tech week beginning Saturday, February 7.
Character Type/Restrictions:
Elwood P. Dowd | (40s–60s, male)Kind, gentle, endlessly polite. Best friend is Harvey a 6’3.5” invisible white rabbit (pooka). Drinks at local bars and warmly introduces Harvey to everyone.
Veta Louise Simmons | (40s–60s, female)Elwood’s high-strung, socially anxious sister. Desperate to be accepted in “proper society.” Tries to commit Elwood to a sanitarium to hide his eccentricity.
Myrtle Mae Simmons | (Late teens–mid 20s, female)Veta’s daughter, Elwood’s niece. Very concerned with marriage prospects and social status.
Embarrassed by Elwood’s behavior and Harvey.
Dr. William R. Chumley | ( 50-60s, male)Famous psychiatrist. He's respected but exhausted. Eventually becomes fascinated, even afraid, of Harvey. Has his own moment of breakdown.
Dr. Lyman Sanderson | (30s–40s, male) Young, ambitious psychiatrist. Competent but sometimes pompous. Has a flirtation with Nurse Kelly.
Nurse Ruth Kelly | (20s–30s, female)Warm, compassionate nurse. She is often underestimated by Sanderson. whom she is secretly attracted to.
Duane Wilson | (20s–40s, male)Strong-armed orderly. Not the brightest but very loyal. Frequently confused and frustrated by Harvey-related chaos.
Judge Omar Gaffney | (50s–70s, male)Family friend and lawyer. Tries to help Veta with legal/logistical concerns. Definite representation of order and reason.
Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet | (60s–80s, female)Elderly society woman who knew the Dowd family. Shocked by Elwood’s behavior but charmed by his politeness.
Betty Chumley | (40s–60s, female)Dr. Chumley’s supportive wife. Gentle and well-meaning; helps soften the tension.
E.J. Lofgren (the Taxi Driver) | (30s–60s, male)Blue-collar, practical, honest. Gives a speech about how sanitariums change people, which influences Veta’s final decision.
