Tongue of a Bird

Rosebud Theatricals is seeking submissions for its inaugural production, Tongue of a Bird by Ellen McLaughlin, directed by Katie McClatchey.

DESCRIPTION:

Tongue of a Bird by Ellen McLaughlin is a drama about Maxine, a skilled search-and-rescue pilot searching for a young girl abducted in the Adirondacks. While investigating, Maxine confronts memories of her mother’s suicide and abandonment, supported by her Polish grandmother, Zofia. The play explores themes of loss and motherhood.

The script contains references to sexual assault, suicide and murder and it includes strong language. Charlotte, who is twelve years old, will also appear covered in blood at many points in the show. Parents and children must be okay with all of the above in order to portray the role accurately.

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals will begin on Monday, May 4th and will go through Tuesday, July 2nd with tech that following week. They will take place Tuesday-Thursday evenings as well as three Sundays: June 14th, June 21st and June 28th.

Actors will not be called for every rehearsal.

Performances will take place at Greenhouse Theater Center on Saturday, July 11th, Sunday, July 12th, Thursday, July 16th, Friday, July 17th, Saturday, July 18th, Friday, July 24th, Saturday, July 25th, Sunday, July 26th, Thursday, July 30th, Friday, July 31st and Saturday, August 1st. Performance times are 7:30 pm Thursday - Saturday and 2:30 pm on Sunday. There will be a total of 11 performances.

Character Type/Restrictions:

MAXINE : THIS ROLE HAS BEEN CAST. Maxine is a search and rescue pilot. She is solitary, ironic and guarded.

DESSA : Open ethnicity. 30s-40s. She is Charlotte’s mother. She is tough, without self pity and totally focused.

ZOFIA : Late 60s - late 70s. This role will require the use of a thick polish accent. Actor must be able to already perform this or be ready and willing to dive in and learn. She is Maxine’s grandmother and Evie’s mother. She is a Polish exile and a survivor of the 1939 Nazi invasion. Visionary, difficult and extremely wise.

CHARLOTTE: Open ethnicity. 12 years old. She is Dessa’s daughter. Mischievous, bold and slightly malicious.

EVIE: 30s - 40s. She is Maxine’s dead mother. Cool, wry and lucid.
