SYNOPSIS
ONE is a 25-minute monologue about a man in his late twenties who has contracted AIDS. In this intimate piece, he speaks directly to the audience about his fear, the comforts he misses, and the relationships that have changed since his diagnosis.
Set at the height of the AIDS epidemic, the play follows a young man confronting the reality that the life he once imagined as youthful and limitless may soon come to an end.
PART OF BEFORE WE ARE HISTORY
ONE is presented as part of BEFORE WE ARE HISTORY, Open Space Arts’ series revisiting plays written during the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Through performances, staged readings, and conversations, the project brings these works back to the stage while reflecting on the lives, experiences, and history they preserve.
The series also includes BLOOD SPILL by Lee Raines, JERKER by Robert Chesley, and a staged reading of A QUIET END by Robin Swados.
ABOUT THE PLAY
ONE premiered in Chicago in the summer of 1983 under the auspices of Lionheart Theatre. Since then, it has been performed in more than 30 cities across the United States and broadcast on radio in more than 40 markets. The play was a winner of the 1984 Jane Chambers Memorial International Gay Playwriting Contest and was presented at the 1986 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Over the years, ONE has been performed in theatres, bars, churches, bookstores, living rooms, and for youth groups, and has even been used as part of the training process for AIDS counselors. Its public performances have traditionally served as fundraisers for local organizations, raising more than $40,000 through its many productions.
