Oil Lamp Theater is seeking submissions for strong actors for its production of Dial M for Murder, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, from the original by Frederick Knott. Daniel King will direct.

Run: 10/2/2026-11/1/2026

Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30pm; Saturday and Sundays at 3pm; Wednesdays, August 19, September 2 (11am and 3pm) and August 26, September 9 (7:30pm).

Oil Lamp Theater does not provide housing. Local hires only.

Dial M For Murder
A new version of the celebrated murder mystery that inspired Hitchcock’s masterpiece! Tony is convinced that his wife Margot has been cheating on him. Now it seems that the affair is over, but in his jealousy, Tony spins a web of suspicion and deception that will tighten around them and ensnare them both in danger, recrimination and murder. Rehearsals will begin Monday, August 17 and are typically held from 7:00-10:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings and on Saturdays from 10:00am-1:00pm until tech which begins on Saturday, September 26.

Initial auditions will be INVITE ONLY and will be held at Oil Lamp Theater located in Glenview on Monday, April 27, 2026 beginning at 7pm.

We will contact you via email if we are interested in having you come in for an audition. Callbacks are by invitation only and will be held in person on Sunday, May 3 beginning at 7pm.

Compensation will be $1,020 This includes a $150 rehearsal stipend and $30 per performance (29 performances total).

Compensation for Understudies is $530 and includes one guaranteed performance. Understudies will be paid $30 per performance for each additional show performed. Understudies must attend a minimum of one rehearsal/performance a week and be at all tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and previews.

Character Type/Restrictions:

CAST

MARGOT WENDICE - female presenting, 30s/40s, English. Though strong and intelligent, she tends toward caution and convention. Stuck in an unfulfilling marriage to Tony.

MAXINE HADLEY -  female presenting, 30s/40s, American. Bold and unafraid to spurn conventional expectations. She is a successful writer and Margot’s former lover.

TONY WENDICE - male presenting, 30s/40s, English. Charming yet calculating, Tony married Margot for her money. He will stop at nothing to keep it.

LESGATE - male-presenting, 30s/40s, English. A con artist and former classmate of Tony. Straightforward in his approach to crime, but by no means a “bumbling fall guy.”

INSPECTOR HUBBARD - male presenting, 20s/40s, English. Intelligent and thorough, with a sense of pride. Unafraid to question others and himself.

Casting Notes:
Seeking actors of all backgrounds for principal roles and understudy positions. Performers of color and queer performers are highly encouraged to submit. The characters we encounter in this show are written with she/her or he/him pronouns respectively. However limiting the descriptions are, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
