Music Theater Works is excited to receive general submissions for our upcoming show of Cats. The audition submissions open Thursday, August 21st are due by Thursday, August 28, 2025. Auditions will only be accepted through the Google Form in this link: https://forms.gle/rBiFNd6ichj3MbBr5

Below are MTW’s policies, and period of engagement. Please send all questions about casting to casting@musictheaterworks.org. We are looking forward to seeing your submissions! Callbacks will be Sunday-September 7th, Tuesday-September 9th, Friday-September 12th. You may be called in for up to 3 callbacks.

Tech Rehearsals: Thursday, February 26th, through Sunday, March 1st
Final Dress: Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00pm
Preview with notes: Wednesday, March 4th at 2:00pm; and Thursday March 5th at 7:30pm
Performance: Fri 03/06 at 7:00pm; Sat 03/07 at 7:30pm; Sun 03/08 at 2:00pm
Wed 03/11 at 2:00pm; Fri 03/13 at 7:30pm; Sat 03/14 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm; Sun 03/15 at 2:00pm

Rehearsals are generally M-Th from 6:30-10:30 PM and Sun. 5-10 PM. Tech Schedule will start at 5:30 PM on weeknights and as early as 1:00 PM on Weekends.

No absences are allowed during Tech.

Character Type/Restrictions:

General Notes for All Auditionees

  • All roles require strong movement ability — this is a dance-heavy show with moments of highly stylized physical storytelling.
  • All performers must be comfortable portraying feline physicality and creating character through movement.
  • Excellent ensemble skills are essential; each cat has a unique personality and “track” throughout the show.
  • Vocal ranges are approximate; flexibility is a plus.

Old Deuteronomy - The wise, paternal leader of the Jellicle Cats. Requires gravitas, warmth, and stillness. Minimal dance; strong acting presence essential. Gender: Male presenting Age: 50+ (stage age) Voice: Baritone/Bass, warm and resonant (B♭2–E4)

Grizabella - The once-glamorous cat now shunned by the tribe. Requires depth, vulnerability, and emotional connection. Minimal dance. Gender: Female presenting Age: 35-55 Voice: Mezzo with a strong belt (G3-E♭5)

Munkustrap -  The narrator and protector of the tribe. Requires strong vocals, charisma, and leadership energy. Strong Dancer. Gender: Male presenting Age: 25-40 Voice: Baritone/Tenor (B2-A4)

Rum Tum Tugger - Flamboyant, rebellious, and magnetic. Think feline rock star. Requires charisma, improv skills, and strong dance. Gender: Male presenting Age: 20-40 Voice: Baritone/Tenor with rock edge (A2-A4)

Mr. Mistoffelees - The magical cat — highly technical dancer role with multiple solos. Must be an exceptional ballet/jazz dancer with strong turns and leaps. Light, agile presence. Gender: Male presenting Age: 19-30 Voice: Tenor or high belt (B2–B♭4)

Macavity - The criminal mastermind — mysterious, dangerous, and seductive. Strong dancer. Gender: Male presenting Age: 25-45 Voice: Baritone (B2-G4)

Bombalurina -  Confident, sassy, and flirtatious. Strong dancer with commanding stage presence. Featured in “Macavity” duet with Demeter. Gender: Female presenting Age: 25-40 Voice: Mezzo with belt (G3-F5)

Demeter - Nervous, sensitive, and cautious. Strong dancer, emotional depth. Sings lead with Bombalurina in “Macavity.” Gender: Female presenting Age: 20-35 Voice: Mezzo (G3-C5)

Jennyanydots - The “Old Gumbie Cat” who teaches discipline to mice and cockroaches. Requires comedic timing, tap dance ability, and warmth. Gender: Female presenting Age: 30-60 Voice: Mezzo/Soprano (B♭3–F♯5)

Skimbleshanks - The railway cat — precise, upbeat, and disciplined. Strong,bright energy, and charm. Gender: Male presenting Age: 25-50 Voice: Tenor (C3-A4)

Gus (Asparagus)/Growltiger - Gus: Frail but dignified elder actor cat; Growltiger: larger-than-life pirate cat. Requires strong acting and character work; minimal dance. Gender: Male presenting Age: 50+ Voice: Baritone (B2-F4)

Victoria - The white cat — graceful, curious, and pure. Lead ballet dancer of the tribe. Exceptional technique required. Gender: Female presenting Age: 18-30 Voice: Soprano (B3-D6)

Tantomile & Coricopat - Strong Dancers Gender: Any Age: 18-35

Ensemble Jellicles 

  • Strong singers and dancers who create distinct cat characters throughout. All must be comfortable with physical theatre, floor work, and quick changes.
  • Featured moments often given to ensemble members (e.g., Tumblebrutus, Alonzo, Pouncival, Electra, Etcetera)
