Hello! Thank you for your interest in auditioning for Modern Archaic’s this post-apocolyptic production of The Bacchae. Please fill out the following form and submit one one-two minute classical dramatic monologue:

Material to Prepare:
1-2 Minute Classical Dramatic Monologue (Shakespeare not preferred)
Time Commitment:
3-4 4-5 hour long rehearsals per week, beginning approximately June 14 (or in that week). Performances should be August 7-9 & 14-16.
Character Type/Restrictions:
The Characters:
Dionysus - Masculine, 20-40 - A quick witted, sly man. Self important, and vengeful. Pretending to be a strange follower of Dionysus for the majority of the play, before revealing himself a god.
Pentheus - Masculine, 20-40 - King of Thebes, quick to anger, and curious to a fault. Conservative in his beliefs on social conduct, and aggressive in enforcing these policies in the face of chaos.
Agave - Feminine, Any age, playing 45-60 - Pentheus’s mother. Overtaken by Dionysus’s mental affliction, until the end. Powerful, she takes charge of the bacchic women while under affliction, Distraught and devastated by the end.
Ino - Feminine, Any age, playing 30-60 - Women who, while under affliction, speak out about their love for Dionysus, and take part in the tragedies that ensue.
Autonoe - Feminine, Any age, playing 30-60 - Women who, while under affliction, speak out about their love for Dionysus, and take part in the tragedies that ensue.
Cadmus - Masculine, Any age, Playing 60+ - Father of the Bacchic chorus, a powerful man who has abdicated the throne and enjoys retirement. Must regain power as tragedy unfolds, and support his daughter Agave in the end. Actor will also portray First Messenger.
Tiresias - Masculine, Any age, playing 60+ - The famous seer and prophet. A careful man, aware of what the gods can do. Actor will also portray the Second Messenger and an Attendant.
Coryphaei (chorus leaders) - 3 women, the Maenads, who have followed Dionysus from city to city as he enforces his will onto their people. Each, unique in personality, serves the god for different reasons, but are all deep in the gods affliction, until the very end.
- Maenad 1 - Feminine, any age - The leader of the maenads, loyal to Dionysus, and harsh in enacting this loyalty and pushing it upon the Bacchic women. Never comes out from under affliction.
- Maenad 2 - Feminine, any age - A sultry manifestation of the lust and pleasure that comes from close proximity to the god. Loves wine, orgies, and debauchery. Never comes out from under affliction.
- Maenad 3 - Feminine, 20-30 - More in tune with the worship and humility required for the job, she displays a by the book, conservative way of serving Dionysus. Until, of course, she begins to see the blood on her hands. Comes out from under affliction.
