MadKap Productions announces auditions for The Fantasticks.

A charming musical comedy about two fathers who plot to trick their children, Matt and Luisa, into falling in love. The show, a parable illuminating the desire for what one doesn’t have as more than one bargains for, features a beautiful score, including the song “Try To Remember.” The Fantasticks is known as the world’s longest running musical, having run off-Broadway for a record 42 years.

Audition dates: April 22nd, and 23rd, with callbacks on April 24th , 7pm to 10pm,

at Skokie Theatre, 7924 Lincoln Ave – Skokie, IL

(easily accessible via CTA Yellow Line, or the #97 CTA bus).

 

 

Actors auditioning for Henry or Mortimer: please prepare a 1-minute comedic monologue, with an emphasis on physicalization/physical comedy.

Actors auditioning for The Mute: please prepare a 1-minute movement routine, with an emphasis on telling a story. You may use recorded music (a digital music player will be available), use live music (please bring sheet music for the accompanist), or dance without music.

All roles available. Actors auditioning for singing roles: please prepare 1 minute of a classic Broadway Standard or uptempo song. Please bring music, marked with your cuts and in your key. An accompanist will be provided.

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals begin Mid July, 2019. Performances begin September 6, and run Fridays through Sunday’s through September 29, 2019. Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sundays at 2pm and one Wednesday matinee at 1:30.

CHARACTERS:

 

The Narrator (El Gallo), age 30-50. A rakish, handsome, sophisticated, gallant, and narrator of the show. He is warm, cordial, and inviting to the audience, but has his own darker moments. He aids the performers in orchestrating the story. Gender: Written as Male, possibility of casting as either Male, Female, or Non-Binary (this depends greatly on the individual auditioning, and the combination of others cast). Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: Ab2

The Girl (Luisa), age 18 to 25 (or believable equivalent). A button-maker's young and pretty daughter, she is a romantic idealist who falls in love with Matt. She is naive, yet honest and tender. Gender: Written as Female, to be cast as Female. Vocal range top: B5 Vocal range bottom: B3

The Boy (Matt), age 18 to 25 (or believable equivalent). An innocent, young man who is searching for love and adventure. A bright guy, but naive and even foolish at times, approaching situations with a false bravado. Gender: Written as Male, to be cast as Male. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: A2

The Boy's Father (Hucklebee) age 40-60 (or believable equivalent). A former boisterous navy man and meticulous gardener who fakes a fight with Bellomy in hopes of
getting their children to fall in love. Gender: Written as Male, can be cast as either Male or Female. Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: A2

The Girl's Father (Bellomy), age 40-60 (or believable equivalent). A fastidious button-maker and also a picky gardener who fakes a fight with Hucklebee in hopes of getting their children together. Gender: Written as male, can be cast as either male or Female. Vocal range top: F#4 Vocal range bottom: A2

The Actor (Henry), age 50-70 (or believable equivalent). An aging, over-the-top Thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare, he is a commedia clown; his world is the stage and he knows no other reality. Non-singing role. Gender: Written as Male, to be cast as Male.

The Man Who Dies (Mortimer), age 20 to 50. Henry's goofy sidekick and another former actor who specializes in stage deaths. A commedia clown, his world is the stage and he does not live in reality. Non-singing role. Gender: Written as Male, can be cast as Male or Female.

The Mute, age 18-40. A speechless presence who watches, acts as the wall, and deals with props; the "invisible" stage assistant. Should be able to easily assist in the story or fade into the background unnoticed. Actor must be able to move with fluidity, and the ability to tell a story with movement. Gender: Any
