SHOW DESCRIPTION:
One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline’s door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together. I and You is an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.

Casting Note: I and You requires a multi-ethnic cast – actors of all races and ethnicities are strongly encouraged to audition. Per the author, the essentiality is that Anthony and Caroline must not be the same race. Character ages are approximate; actors who can believably portray the age are encouraged to audition regardless of their actual age.

Character Type/Restrictions:

Anthony: Male-identifying, late teens (able to play 17-18 year old)

He is neat, poised, mature for his age. He’s an A student, a team player, a nice guy. He’s not really great around girls. He takes his homework very seriously. When he likes something (jazz music) he is all in. Throughout the whole play he looks at Caroline like he’s trying to figure her out. Like he really needs to know who she is.

Caroline: Female-identifying, late teens (able to play 17-18 year old)

Cynical, guarded, and sharper than she lets on. Though she is dealing with illness, she doesn’t lead with vulnerability - her sarcasm and wit do the talking. Her bedroom has become her entire world, both sanctuary and cage. She keeps others at arm’s length and rarely lets an honest feeling rise to the surface.
