Dominican University Performing Arts Center is seeking energetic actors for a live combination of professional guest artist and student production of Holmes & Watson – Apt 2B by Kate Hamill, directed by Krista Hansen.

This fast-paced and wildly entertaining new play re-imagines the most iconic detective team of all time. In present-day Baker Street, steampunk hipster Ms. Holmes and her quasi-sturdy new roommate Ms. Watson become entangled in a series of cases all related to the same supervillain, who always seems to be one step ahead of them.

—Intimacy and violence choreographer will be part of the rehearsal process.
—All roles open.
—Rather than engaging understudies, we are seeking a double cast to alternate performances and serve as the understudy for the other cast if needed.
—We advocate inclusive casting, welcoming all identities of race, culture, gender, size, LGBTQAI+, and are seeking a company of collaborators who engage in consent-based practices and honor artists as human beings.

Please note: This is a physically demanding show for all actors involved.

Character Type/Restrictions:

CHARACTERS:

SHERLOCK HOLMES: female-identifying. British. A once-in-a-generation genius. Eccentric. Focused, to a fault. Can be less-than-sensitive. Like many geniuses, has a megalomaniac streak. Gets bored easily; likes applause; sometimes accused of being unfeeling. LOVES costumes and drama.

DR. JOAN WATSON: female-identifying. American. Formerly type-A high-achiever. Recently divorced; struggling to find herself, feels broken. Reflexively defensive. Sometimes accused of being a loser; is not a loser. Wry. Smart. Oozes empathy.

IRENE ADLER / MRS. HUDSON / MRS. DREBBER, et al:

— Irene Adler: VERY female-identifying. Nationality TBD. A whip-smart, super-charming sex worker finding success at the highest levels. Has incredible charm, confidence, and wit, and she knows it—uses it without mercy. You may want to be Irene, or you may want to be with Irene; you cannot ignore her.

— Mrs. Hudson: female-identifying. British/cockney. Holmes & Watson’s long-suffering landlady.
— Mrs. Drebber: female-identifying. British. Seemingly an ordinary housewife. Somebody you would be very wise not to underestimate.

— Mr. Drebber: male-identifying. Deceased.

— Pizza Delivery Person: Descriptions vague and hidden.

MORIARTY / LESTRADE / ELLIOT MONK:

— Moriarty: male-identifying. Nationality TBD. A criminal so great you’ve never heard of him. A master blackmailer; knows just when to play his cards. Wears many masks. A professional. Amoral, but you’d like him.

— Lestrade: male-identifying. Nationality TBD. An inspector new to his position at Scotland Yard. Not very imaginative. Often says the wrong thing.

— Elliot Monk: male-identifying. American. An amoral tech billionaire from Texas.
