In reference to the character descriptions below—most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the original scripts. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive and we invite gender non- conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. In addition, we will list disability when specific to a character, but are otherwise seeking actors of all abilities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

Material to Prepare:

Please submit your headshot and resume to casting@babeswithblades.org by October 3rd. Auditions will be scheduled at the request of the BWBTC casting team for October 7th and 14th. If you have auditioned for us from 2022 until now, you do not need to submit again.

Accessibility information:
We're happy to discuss specific accommodations or access measures with or without knowing your specific disability status. For any other accessibility requests, including access needs if asked to submit a video audition, contact casting@babeswithblades.org or call/text 773-217-8406.

CHARACTER TYPES/RESTRICTIONS (Please note all roles will have understudies):

The S Paradox by Jillian Leff

Sloane: F, Any Race/Ethnicity, mid 20s; Tough, strong-willed, but also naive. Was born the year guns were outlawed. Must be a proficient stage combatant, specifically with swords and unarmed choreography.

S: F, Any Race/Ethnicity, Mid 40s: Sloane 20 years in the future - the years (and her decisions) were not kind to her. Must be a proficient stage combatant, specifically with swords and unarmed choreography.

Ava: F, BIPOC, mid to late 30s: Sloane's girlfriend, a librarian who is whip smart and has probably read every book in the library and then some. Is old enough to remember the USA before its sweeping reform. Unarmed fight skills are a plus, but not a requirement.

Dez: Any Gender*, BIPOC, Late 20s-Early 30s: A computer hacker, consistent snacker, and all around big 'ol nerd. No fight skills required.
(*Pronouns of the character to be determined by both actors playing each version of Dez and director)

Older Dez: Any Gender*, BIPOC, Late 40s-Early 50s: Dez 20 years in the future. Still a big 'ol nerd, but a little more battle hardened. No fight skills required.
(*Pronouns of the character to be determined by both actors playing each version of Dez and director)

William: M, White, 40s: Director of the CRC Intelligence Agency. Formal and precise, but can also be quite charming. Character handles a theatrical firearm, appropriate training will be provided.

The Nameless: Any Gender, Any Race/Ethnicity, Any Age: Agents of the CRC and William's lackeys. Also play additional ensemble roles. Must be proficient stage combatants, specifically with knives and unarmed choreography.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.

Aligned with their mission of representing marginalized voices, “BWBTC Shakespeare” specifically features actors of marginalized genders (which includes Cis Women, Trans folks, GNC, Non-Binary folks, etc.) to provide an opportunity for audiences to perceive these classic stories through a new lens. We are open to actors of all ethnicities and identities, and we strongly encourage actors with disabilities and BIPOC actors to submit. All but five actors in the ensemble will be playing multiple roles. All characters are open to any actor regardless of race, gender, or background. This is meant to be an ensemble of players, and the casting breakdown will reflect that.
