INITIAL AUDITION: If contacted for the general audition, Actors will be asked to submit a self-tape with a contemporary monologue of their choosing, maximum 2 minutes.
IN- PERSON CALLBACK AUDITION: Saturday, July 18, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. @Vagabond School of the Arts (4001 N Ravenswood Ave UNIT 504, Chicago, IL 60613). Actors invited for callbacks will receive sides.
Script Synopsis:
The “Fix” was supposed to correct everything that seemed to have gone wrong in the country. Now, three members of a shattered family occupy different corners of a society in free-fall, each surviving, and resisting, in their own way. Which of them will make it to Paradise, what will it cost, and does such a place even exist? A Dark Wood is a new dystopian fable from award-winning playwright Eric Coble.

Production Notes: There will be NO understudies cast for any role; The role of Montrose has been cast.

Character Type/Restrictions:
Earthworm, Male; Any ethnicity; 20s
Character description: A young man newly arrived at The Mouth, a no-man’s land by a river. He is hoping to make a border crossing and begin what he imagines is a better life. He has a lot to learn about survival in a refugee camp.
Lightning Bug, Female; Any ethnicity; Late teens – early 20s.
Character description: Younger sister of Earthworm. Scrappy and bright young woman who is Vivian’s former student and visits her in secret to continue the lessons which have been banned by the authorities. She is nobody’s victim.
Armadillo, Female; Any ethnicity; 20s- early 30s.
Character description: An officer with the state police force and older sister of Earthworm and Lightning Bug. She has a strict ideological code that has been challenged by an unexpected encounter and has made her question her entire existence.
Vivian, Female; Any ethnicity; 40- 60
Character description: A former teacher and now a fugitive, labeled a ‘parasite’ by the authorities for not teaching the approved curriculum. She is hiding in an apartment teaching her star pupil in secret, never knowing when the next knock on the door will be someone coming to arrest her.
Dipper, Male; Any ethnicity; 40 – 60
Character description: The landlord who is hiding Vivian in one of his apartments and extracting a steep price for his accommodation.
