Idle Muse Theatre Company is seeking submissions for WITCH by Jen Silverman, directed by Ensemble Member Libby Beyreis, which will be performed this Fall at The Edge Off Broadway Theater in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago.
A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their darkest wishes. Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled a “witch” and cast out by the town, but her soul is not so readily bought. As the devil returns to convince her – and then returns again – unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and the village is forever changed. An inventive retelling of a Jacobean drama, this sharp, subversive fable debates how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to come by.

Special Notes:
The production will include an Intimacy Director.
Some moments of intimacy are currently planned for the presentation of the play, including period-appropriate displays of public affection and touch. The characters of Frank and Cuddy kiss and have some violent sexually infused grappling; Elizabeth and Scratch have intimate energy but do not progress to physical intimacy.
Actors of Color strongly encouraged to submit for all roles.
Compensation:
There is a base stipend of $100 for all roles. In addition to the base stipend, Idle Muse operates under shareholder model, in which a full 50% of box office revenue is reserved and divided evenly among the cast and production team.
Idle Muse is an all-volunteer theater collective with company funds dedicated only to production costs. No funds are reserved for leadership or staff salaries, which are also volunteer positions.

Roles Available:
ELIZABETH SAWYER - 40s-60s. An intelligent, opinionated woman and an outcast.
SCRATCH - 20s-30s. The devil. Or at least a devil. Recently promoted and eager to prove himself.
SIR ARTHUR BANKS - 50s-60s. A wealthy and powerful man.
CUDDY BANKS - 20s-30s. Sir Arthur's son, shy and unsure of himself. A morris-dancer. This role will have stage combat and intimacy.
FRANK THORNEY - 20s-30s. A confident and successful young man, charming, ambitious, and ruthless. This role will have stage combat and intimacy.
WINNIFRED - 20s-30s. Sir Arthur's serving woman, resigned and pragmatic, secretly married to Frank.
