independent theatre production of oscar wilde’s salomé is seeking actors.
about the play: salomé, the princess of judea, falls in love with a prisoner of war whom her stepfather-uncle is keeping prisoner in a trash can. he doesn’t love her back; she has him killed. the style is oscar wilde by way of the king james bible. wilde was interested in the relationship between desire and state violence and so are we.
about the production: this is an independent production that will take place at united church of rogers park. all kinds of performers are encouraged to audition. if you’re comfortable speaking difficult, poetic and/or classical text, that’s a plus. this production has a trans director and trans lead. for the director’s past work, see www.woolstation.org.
Time Commitment:
rehearsals held at united church of rogers park may 26 - july 18.
technical rehearsals july 12 - july 18.
there will be 12 performances total between july 19 - august 2.
rehearsals will generally be in the evenings on mondays, tuesdays, thursdays, and saturday and/or sunday evenings.
full rehearsal schedule will be confirmed at start of process.
Character Type/Restrictions:
**please note: the role of salomé has already been cast.**
we are generally not interested in casting based on actor's identity; anyone should feel free to audition for any and all roles. the exception is that herod and herodias should ideally be older than 40; the page and the young captain should ideally be under 40.
supporting roles:
the young captain: earnest, brave, troubled.
the page of herodias: melancholy, heartsick, overworked.
first soldier: guards the prisoner. newer at the job.
second soldier: guards the prisoner. less new at the job.
the guest / tigellinus: these are two roles to be played by the same actor. the first is a tourist; the second is a diplomat.
principal roles:
jokanaan, the prophet: poet, prisoner, incandescently angry
herod, tetrarch of judaea: the king; drunk, lascivious, insecure
herodias, wife of the tetrarch: the only character with a sense of irony
