Madison Street Theater is seeking a dynamic, diverse cast of actors for our upcoming fall production of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Next to Normal. All roles are paid. We strongly encourage actors of all races, gender identities, body types, and abilities to audition.

NEXT TO NORMAL explores the impact of mental illness on a suburban family, told through an electrifying contemporary rock score. At its heart is Diana Goodman, a mother battling bipolar disorder as her family fights to find balance, stability, and hope. Raw, honest, and deeply human, this musical is an unforgettable journey of resilience, love, and healing.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Initial auditions are video submissions, please submit all materials by midnight Aug 3 via THIS LINK . In person call backs are by invitation Aug 12 and/or Aug 13  at Madison Street Theater, 1010 Madison St, Oak Park

* Two contrasting 32-Bar contemporary musical theater selections in the style of the show. Selections from Next to Normal are welcome but not required

Character Type/Restrictions:

DIANA GOODMAN – Female-identifying, 40s–50s Delusional, passionate, witty, and deeply loving. She is struggling with bipolar disorder and grief.
Vocal Range: Mezzo with strong belt (G3–F#5)

DAN GOODMAN – Male-identifying, 40s–50s
Diana’s husband. Stoic, dedicated, and trying desperately to hold the family together.

Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor (Ab2–B4)

NATALIE GOODMAN – Female-identifying, late teens
Diana and Dan’s overachieving daughter. Intelligent, sarcastic, and longing for attention.
Vocal Range: Mezzo with belt (G3–G5)

GABE GOODMAN – Male-identifying, late teens to early 20s
Diana and Dan’s son. Charismatic, mysterious, and a powerful presence.
Vocal Range: Tenor (C3–C5)

HENRY – Male-identifying, late teens
Natalie’s classmate and love interest. Kind, loyal, a bit of a stoner, but sincere.
Vocal Range: Tenor (G3–A4)

DR. MADDEN / DR. FINE – Male-identifying, 30s–50s
Diana’s psychiatrists. One is practical and reserved; the other is bold and idealized.
Vocal Range: Rock Tenor (A2–A4)
