We are looking to expand our ensemble!

The Paper Theatre is a performance ensemble dedicated to seeking out Meeting between participants and spectators. We define Meeting as sharing precious, living actions through structured performance.

Here are some of the core ideas behind what we do to see if we’re the right fit for you:

  • Focusing on the performer’s craft—we believe that the experience between performers and the audience is the most essential component of performance
  • Process-oriented ensemble work without the pressures of deadlines and audience expectation—this fosters a safe space for courageous creation
  • Creating original pieces from scratch, or utilizing existing works as springboards to create our own expressions of them
  • Working on pieces until they are ready—not taking shortcuts, not compromising for the sake of easy solutions
  • Sharing discoveries via free workshops—giving back to the community in a low-stakes environment where all are welcome regardless of experience/background

Performers that should apply are:

  • Desiring to express their own ideas and personal experience through performance technique, as opposed to simply illustrating a text
  • Unsatisfied with being cast as a certain “type” and rejecting performance cliché (essentially, those looking to be accepted as the unique human that they are)
  • Seeking freedom from the pressures of the commercial theatre: the need to fill seats, the inadequacy of auditions, and never enough time to properly explore
  • Willing to devote the time necessary to reach a deep level of craft and trust within an ensemble

The selection process will consist of an interview followed by an individual work session.

Interested applicants should submit a headshot, resume, and short letter of intent to admin@thepapertheatre.org with the subject line “Ensemble Interview – [your name].” Of these, the letter of intent is the most essential. The interview location and time will be sent if selected.

Time Commitment:

Rehearsals will be two nights a week for three hours each in the Edgewater neighborhood, with specific days and times based upon company member schedules. This is a long-term, ensemble commitment.
